Fantasy Drafts are upon us, or maybe they are already underway. There are many things to consider but one factor that is often overlooked is Players in their Contract Year.
Take a gander at a few of these Contact Year players and draft accordingly.
These players have more to play for than anyone else – their performances will determine their salaries for the next season and beyond.
Quarterbacks:
Tom Brady – Patriots – There have been rumours of a contract extension for Brady but there is nothing as of yet. He will be hugely motivated to stay in the city that gave him a chance and has worshipped him over the years. If no contract offers come to the table before the season, Brady will have to prove that his knee is healthy and that he is worth the elite money that he is undoubtedly asking for.
Peyton Manning – Colts – He is another QB that should have an extension done soon. Whispers are that the Colts owner will make good on his promise to make Manning the highest player in the NFL. If an offer doesn’t come soon, Manning, like Brady will be auditioning for one of the biggest contracts in NFL history.
Donovan McNabb – Redskins – McNabb still has a lot left in the tank and will look to improve a bad team. If he can do this then he will prove that he’s worth big money. If McNabb flops, a backup role and a smallish contract could be in order for next season and beyond.
Other to Monitor – Matt Hasselbeck – Seahawks
Running Backs:
DeAngelo Williams – Panthers – It is hard to believe that the Panthers haven’t locked this guy up! Unless he sustains a bad injury this season, he’s in line for a huge contract. Durability is the only thing standing in his way. Look for Williams to emerge a Top 5 RB this season because of motivation alone.
Cedric Benson – Bengals – The Bengals may have locked him up already if it wasn’t for offseason off-field issues. Benson is a workhorse and deserves an extension – don’t think that he doesn’t know it! Benson has no real competition in Cincinnati so look for him to have a great year.
Joseph Addai – Colts – Addai absolutely needs to have a great year – his competition Donald Brown is waiting in the wings. He knows that he has to be huge this season or risk being overlooked during the free agent period next season. I for one have little faith in Addai and think that his days as a starter with a starter’s salary are over.
Others to Monitor – Tim Hightower – Cardinals and Ricky Williams – Dolphins
Wide Receivers:
Randy Moss – Patriots – Moss will be out to prove that his best days are not behind him. He wants to be paid like a Top Receiver and will be uber-motivated to prove why. With his quarterback in the same position, this could be a scary duo this season.
Steve Smith – Giants – He is Eli manning’s favourite and most trusted target and has emerged as a Top tier or two receiver. Smith knows that he should be paid to reflect this and will do everything in his power get the payday he deserves. Eli manning will try to make Smith a rich man – wait and see!
Santonio Holmes – Jets – Off field troubles have dampened the interest in a long term deal for Holmes. It could go either way for Holmes – he could light it up and warrant a huge contract or he could punk out and slide back to WR2 status. The money will be a result of his attitude and his play this season.
Other to Monitor – Sidney Rice – Vikings
